A trans student in Ontario is petitioning to let trans students go by their chosen names in school instead of being deadnamed (the act of using a trans person's pre-transition name) in class and on official documents. Using someone's self-assigned name not only shows support, but can also prevent unsolicited outing and bullying.

*Note that the definition for deadnaming in the article is misphrased. Instead of "ignoring a birth or legal name over a chosen name", it should say "using" or "prioritizing a birth or legal name over a chosen name".
