The interesting question here is what people take to be the deciding criteria for the “correct” pronunciation of a place name: the namesake's pronunciation or its current variant among inhabitants of the place. We are actually dealing with two names: the person's name and the place name. In becoming a place name, the word gets subjected to linguistic processes like any other "borrowed" word. Place-naming is transformative.
