Parents face legal challenge after naming their baby 'Jihad'

Jihad is a common name among Arabic speakers and/or Muslims. As the article states, its original meaning is “self-denial or a personal and non-violent battle against sin”, but for those who do not speak Arabic and are not Muslim, it has become associated with violent acts and hateful ideologies. This case makes us think about how names are interpreted differently in different linguistic and cultural contexts.
