In another case of calling out cultural appropriation, former NBA player Kenyon Martin uses a name as a proxy for race when he claims that Jeremy Lin should not be wearing his hair in dreadlocks because his last name is Lin. Of course the name has nothing to do with hairstyles but his Chinese name means he must be Asian, or at least not Black. Since dreadlocks are a considered to be a Black hair style according to Martin, Lin should not be allowed to wear it. Lin responds that it’s a way to appreciate other cultures, pointing to Martin’s Chinese tattoos as an example.
