Baby Name Fañch Causes Debate

New parents in France named their son Fañch but the French administration would not allow the tilde on the ñ since it is not a recognized diacritic in modern French. The ñ is a letter in Breton, a recognized minority language spoken in the French region where both the baby’s parents are from. After some debate, the mayor’s office of Quimper finally decided to accept the registration of Fañch with the tilde, defending the parents’ choice in this “private” matter.
