Why I Changed My Name to an Initial

D could never stand her first name, and constantly having to repeat and spell it out during her school years in Ontario just contributed to making her feel uncomfortable. Finally, she left Canada for New Zealand and fell in love with a man who would just call her D. In love with the man and the name he gave her, she now went by D, but back in Ontario her request to legally change her name was denied. The reason? “An initial is not a valid name.”
