Author Saleema Nawaz could never identify with her Indian last name, the only remnant of her father who had abandoned her. Even as teenager she contemplated whether she should change her name or not. Finally, as a mother and wife, Saleema decided that she wanted to have the same last name as her family, but there was just one problem: The fact that is illegal to take your partner's surname in Quebec.
