Baby Names Can’t Be Stolen

Cross-culturally, the idea of names as property is not uncommon. It is also the case in several cultural groups that a name cannot be given to more than one person in the community--name repetitions can only occur when the first one has died. This article shows that similar beliefs may exist on an individual level among some English speakers who feel strongly that others in their social network should not "steal" their baby's name.
